Born in Onomichi, Japan, Masami Teraoka moved to Los Angeles where he received his MFA from Otis Art Institute in 1968. Widely known for his early work that adopted the traditional aesthetics of Edo period woodblock prints, he has since abandoned this style in favor of Western European religious iconography, in tune with his cultural and political critique of contemporary culture, particularly its confessional quality in America society. Teraoka’s work has been reviewed, collected and exhibited throughout the United States and abroad. Significant museum exhibits include the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, CA; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN; Contemporary Art Museum, Houston, TX; The Contemporary Museum, Honolulu, HI; Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC; Asian Art Museum, San Francisco, CA; Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, CT; Chicumagawa Highway Museum, Obuse, Japan; Fredericks Bastion, Copenhagen Denmark; and Art Gallery and Museum, Glasgow, Scotland.
