The future does not exist is a body of work that quietly points to the fullness of the present moment. Cast-off palm fronds are given new life as paper-like substrate for paintings. Floating, painted squares veil the surface of the paper, while nuanced differences are observed through and enhanced by repetition.

Silver leaf glows bronze from the passing of time. Pink salt blocks stand sentinel beneath palm portals. Through labor, humble materials become transformed into ritualized objects.  These objects, transmuted with a kind of alchemy where process and presence meet, provide an opportunity for a physical intimacy in the viewing.

With hushed optimism, Jenene Nagy’s work celebrates the view that only the present is real.

Jenene Nagy is a visual artist living and working in the Inland Empire. She received her BFA from the University of Arizona in 1998 and her MFA from the University of Oregon in 2004. Nagy’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at venues including the Portland Art Museum, Weatherspoon Art Museum, Southern Exposure in San Francisco, Takt Kunstprojektraum in Berlin, and Samuel Freeman in Los Angeles, among others. Her work has been recognized with grants and awards from the Foundation of Contemporary Art, the Oregon Arts Commission, Colorado Creative Industries, and the Ford Family Foundation.
