NO STRINGS ATTACHED…
Since her graduation from Central St. Martin’s in London in 2008, Danish-born artist Mie Olise Kjærgaard’s work has focused on architectural decay as a reflection of our disposable contemporary society. Her paintings drip and heave with the fluctuations of the modern world, monuments erected to our desire for concrete and steel inevitably eroded by a baser instinct for flexibility.
The size, the type of installation, and the imagery delivered on that exhibition at Freeman Gallery let us suppose that Mie Olise Kjærgaard has now no strings attached with any of the principles she might have learned during her studies in architecture. From the point of view of an LA artist, the “no strings attached” thing is the obvious because this is the principle of LA, when on the contrary, from a European artist, the “no strings attached” thing requires a whole mental process to get rid of the weigh of centuries of art history.
And when succeeding to unleash yourself from the Art History, you can bring to the table, the best part of it: the unconscious of Art History left in your brain. This is what young Danish artist Mie Olise Kjærgaard is doing and showing at Samuel “Free”man…
